How to prepare your toddler for your maternity and newborn session
Young children are so fun to include in maternity and newborn photography sessions, but they do need a little bit of preparation to know what to expect and help them to remain calm, particularly since they are experiencing SO much change within their family unit, and at a prime age for experiencing stranger danger as well.
Let them know that the session will be fun
All photo sessions are toddler led, and lots of fun. We will have time to explore, share their favorite toys, read a book, and be themselves.
They Do Not Need To Smile
I spend a lot of time interacting with and focusing on your toddler, so I’m able to capture many photos that are true to their personality. There’s no need to force them to say ‘cheese’ or to smile for a photos. Just let them know that they can relax, play, and be themself.
You Can Tell Them That I’m a Mom
I find that it’s often helpful for young kids to know who they are meeting, or who is coming to their home. Feel free to let them know that I have two daughters, love taking pictures, and also have two silly cats! If it would help them, feel free to show them this little video where I introduce myself! Then, we’ve already met before I see them at your photo session.
Bring Clean Snacks + Water
It’s never fun when a toddler is thirsty or hungry, and this is no exception at a photo session. So bring snacks (not colorful messy ones) along to outdoor sessions, as well as some water to keep them happy. You can have them participate in packing or picking the snack as well from a selection of good choices.
Let Them Bring a Favorite Item or Photo
If we are not meeting at your home for your session, I encourage you to have your toddler bring their favorite doll, stuffed animal, or current favorite item to have at the session. This can help to increase their comfort level at the session, and give them something to be proud of and share at the shoot. It also creates a nice little memory for you of what they were really into at their current age and stage.
