Guest Blog: What To Wear for Your Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session; Tips From Personal Stylist, The Look Editor

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION

Sounds crazy to think about what to wear for a newborn photo session, but believe me: your outfits can greatly impact the final result.

You can think about the photo itself, and how your outfit may impact the outcome of the photo:

What style of photo do I like? Do I prefer black & white or color? Are we going for a natural and organic vibe? Or are you looking for a more traditional and pulled together photo? Is the photo session at home, or at a studio?

Discussing this with the photographer will help you narrow down your (and your family's) outfit decisions. With a little bit of thought, you will see that you probably already have an aesthetic in mind.

When working with Rebecca of Hunnicutt Photography, you have the opportunity to hire the stylist services of The Image Consultant, to guide you in this task. But, if you feel like DIY, here is a list of categories and thoughts for you to be inspired by, and help make your wardrobe decisions:

Comfort

If you plan to dress up your little one, make sure to have a second option more aligned with their routine. I suggest trying everything first; get them used to any accessories or different textures you might want to use to ensure they are comfortable in your outfit choice. An easy and neutral selection is a solid newborn size onesie. Another great way to add an interesting visual / texture to the baby’s outfit is by adding a special knitted blanket.

Style

Make sure everyone is aligned within the sense of style you are going for with your photo session, creating an elevated connection. Even when having your photoshoot at home, ensure everyone is going to the same "event" and styled within the same level or casualness or dress. Here are some great examples of post birth comfortable dresses that are also stylish:

Color

Neutral colors such as grays, beiges, and whites are the best options to match most decor and other family members' clothes. Also, because everyone will be cuddling, and holding the baby close, it’s best to avoid strong colors that can cast color tones on the baby’s face.

These three color schemes are easy to find in your own closet.

To the Mamas

In 99% of photographs, your baby will be in you and your partners’ arms, right? So, you can highlight your bust by wearing "V" necks, off-shoulder, wrap blouses, and dresses. Reminder: always choose soft fabrics; they accommodate curves better.

Here are some great examples for the post birth comfort and style.

"Mini-me"

Wearing ‘lookalike’ clothes like mom and/or dad can be super fun for kids! This is a good way to make them fit your aesthetic and feel important if you need buy in from them…but matching is not required.

What To Avoid While Preparing Clothes For Your Newborn Session

I am not a big fan of "don'ts" but avoiding these three items can also make a difference:

Printed Grafix/Logos

These photos are meant to be a family heirloom, a moment to remember. Avoid big logos, catchy phrases or character clothing. You might regret it later. If you are having trouble making your older children leave behind their character shirts, let them choose a color within the range you suggest.

Big Accessories

Headbands on newborns, mama's big earrings, statement necklaces, all of this can take away attention from your baby and you. This is one of the few occasions that I go for "less is more".

Don't freak out and overdress

This moment is beautiful as it is, keeping it real is part of it. Avoid doing any make-up or hairstyle that you are not used to.

This Is A Joyful Creative Moment

Last but not least, make this a joyful creative moment. if you feel you need some help, that's what I am here for. The stylist and personal shopper service can be a great help for this hands full moment.
