How My Prior Professional Background Supports My Newborn Sessions

I know that there is a lot we don’t know about the small businesses we work with, and sometimes an about page may not really capture fully the essence and all important features that are important to know when hiring a photographer.

That’s why I’m writing this post, just to let you know about my prior professional experience, and how it relates to photographing newborns and their families.

Before living abroad and launching my professional photography business, I worked as a pediatric nurse on inpatient nursing units for 3 years, and then worked as a pediatric nurse practitioner (masters prepared advanced practice nurse) for over 10 years. This extensive time working within pediatrics (and during my RN and MSN training) included babies and children of all ages, from premature babies to 18+ year old teens.

I’m professionally trained to work with newborns

This skill set makes me uniquely qualified to work with newborns and children at your lifestyle newborn session. I’m aware of how to safely hold a newborn, how to position them for comfort and beautiful photos, I am keen to their cues for needing a feeding or a diaper change, and am very comfortable multitasking with a baby in hand.

In addition, I have lots of experience working with new older siblings and their brand new baby siblings as well. To know when a toddler or young child may need a break, as well as fun and creative ways to keep them engaged in their photo session with age appropriate expectations.

I’m aware of the unique health and safety concerns with newborns

I want you to rest assured that I wash my hands prior to interacting with your newborn, and fully vaccinated for Covid-19, influenza, as well as the standard adult immunizations. I would reach out to reschedule your session if needed due to illness, and also have a local colleague to contact in case of illness and if a session can not be rescheduled.

I hope that this puts your mind at ease that you are inviting a photographer into your home who has extensive knowledge and training to safely and efficiently work with your newborn for their first photo session.
