Child-Led Family Photography: Embracing Play for Authentic Moments
Why I Let Kids Take the Lead in Family Photo Sessions (and Why You Should Too!)
Do you, as a parent, worry about how your child will respond to the photographer you hire or feel nervous about booking a family photo session because you’re unsure if your children will ‘behave’? The good news is that I plan my family photo sessions to be child-centered. By letting children take the lead, I’m able to capture genuine moments that show their authentic personalities and the love shared between your family members—and they will have fun!
If you checked out my about page, you’ll see that I worked as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for a decade before becoming a Portland Oregon based professional photographer. And although I say I’m a family photographer, I’m really a children’s photographer who enjoys capturing them within their lovely family unit. My experience working with children and babies as a nurse translates to kids who are comfortable, engaged, and excited to have fun during your session. And bonus—when they are relaxed and having fun, Mom and Dad can also just enjoy the moment with their kids.
What Does 'Child-Led' Mean in Photography?
So, you’re probably wondering—what does a child-focused family photography session actually mean? It means that I will be highly interactive with your child, as much as they are comfortable. I will greet them and start the photo session with their individual portraits. We’ll play games, and I’ll let them come up with ideas for photos. It also means that we’ll take breaks or change locations when they seem less interested in participating.
Benefits of Child-Led Sessions
When your child is comfortable with their photographer, they will relax and have a great time. This means you’ll receive photographs that capture authentic smiles and show the true personality of your child. And as a bonus, the photography experience will be a positive one—so in the future, your child will be excited to participate in a photo session, whether for your family, school portraits, or other milestones.
How to Prepare for a Child-Focused Family Photo Session
Before our session, we’ll chat about your child so I can get to know them a bit. I’ll share what my expectations are based on their age and development and what you can expect from me to help your child relax and feel comfortable. We’ll also discuss location options to find a setting where your child will feel most at ease, relaxed, and free to explore.
You can also show them my photo on my website and let them know that I’m a mom, have two cats, and love Taylor Swift—this helps them get to know me in a fun, relatable way! Most importantly, we’ll embrace flexibility during the session, allowing for spontaneous moments and letting go of perfection. After all, we’re taking your child’s lead.
My Experience With Child-Led Family Photography Sessions
I recently had a photo session with two young boys who were very active. I could tell their parents were nervous that we might not be getting good photos, but by taking a child-led approach, I was able to create beautiful images for them.
This is what their mom said about the session:
"Rebecca was one of the most patient, understanding, and thorough people I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with. Her impressive communication skills could only be topped by how amazing her photos were. Somehow she worked magic in creating beautiful photos out of what felt like minimal cooperative moments with my young children. Her photos captured so much fun and beauty—so impressive. Plus, really great communication after the session around getting the pictures." – Molly
By utilizing child-first activities and moments, what felt like minimal cooperation to the parents was actually a very successful photo session.
Tips for a Successful Child-Led Photo Session
Here are a few things I do to ensure a child-led family photo session:
📸 Encourage Play – We’ll incorporate games, activities, and lots of movement to keep everyone relaxed and having fun.
👶 Follow the Child’s Lead – I’ll let children guide the session based on their energy level, curiosity, and willingness to connect.
⏳ Patience is Key – Some kids are ready to chat and interact right away, while others need more time to warm up. Giving them that space is essential to capturing natural, joyful images.
By adopting a child-led approach as parents and photographers, we create a relaxed atmosphere where your family’s authentic connections shine through—resulting in images you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
