Hoyt Arboretum is one of my families favorite locations in Portland to explore, and go on hikes that have a variety of terrains as well as a mix of trees and forest types. We’re lucky in that it’s close to our home, but it is a central location easily accessed from all of Portland.

In this comprehensive location guide I’ll share my favorite features of Hoyt Arboretum, special considerations if you are considering a photography session at the arboretum, as well as seasonal information.

Access & Logistics

Address: 4000 SW Fairview Blvd. Portland, OR 97221

Parking: There is a decent amount of paid parking, as well as some free off street parking. If it’s a beautiful weekend allow time to find a parking spot as that’s when they are limited.

Accessibility: There are some areas easily accessible, but others require stairs and walking on uneven natural terrain. Plan shoes accordingly

Hours: 5am - 10pm

Seasonal Considerations

Winter: The areas I love to use aren’t too far into the arboretum, and the park is beautiful in all seasons including winter. The evergreen trees are beautiful to highlight for that winter vibe.

Spring: Flowering plants are in abundance in the spring and there are different paths and hikes that highlight the different flowers, including cherry blossoms.

Summer: The arboretum is great for summer sessions because the trees provide lots of filtering of the sun, allowing us to have a session here at almost any time of day.

Fall: If fall leaves are what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed at Hoyt Arboretum. There are beautiful fall leaves throughout the season easily accessible for photos.

Favorite Features of Hoyt Arboretum

+This is a great location if you are not available during golden hour, as the tall trees filter the light at all times of day.

+We can get various looks and types of trees without needing to explore very far.

+It’s a great location for any season.

+The location close to the city and many suburbs makes it an ideal location for a family session, or shorter session where you don’t have the time to drive farther afield.

Tips about having a photo session at Hoyt Arboretum:

  • If we’ve had lots of rain, consider this when selecting your shoes as we do go off the trail occasionally.

  • This is a perfect location for a family of any size, your immediate family and or your extended family

  • Consider the weather and dress appropriately. We’ll be in the shade so if it’s a cool day consider a cardigan and bring a blanket.

  • If you plan to bring your dog but it’s their first time to visit Hoyt Arboretum, consider bringing them for a hike on another day so they get used to the location as it’s busy and has so many dog smells.
