Updated 2024
Traditionally, school photos are always taken at the start of the school year, but with preschool portraits there’s flexibility to do your photos in the spring, or to do a second picture day in the spring.

Benefits of Spring School Picture Days
Document Another Point Of Time In Your Student’s Year
Students change so quickly in a short period of time, and this is even more apparent with preschool students. When you can capture their photo in the fall, and then again in the spring you can really see how they change so much in those early years.
Provides An Additional Opportunity For Photos
Unfortunately, there are always a few students who miss picture day due to illness or travel. And, there are some kids who for whatever reason are hesitant to have their photo taken…particularly young toddlers during the ‘stranger danger’ phase. Having photos in the spring provides an opportunity for students who missed pictures in the fall to have their photo taken.’
Children Become Increasingly Comfortable With The Photo Process
Some kids have a personality that works well when they are exposed to situations and people more than once. When we hold picture day in the fall and spring, those children will meet me and see the photo set up more than once, and become less reserved as well as more interested in the photo process. This is one of the many benefits of working with the same school photographer each year.
Children New To A School Are More Comfortable
In the fall, if the school and classroom is new to a student sometimes they are still getting used to the whole school system and routines, and are not ready to shine with their true personalities during photos. Holding picture day in the spring provides them another opportunity for photos when they are more accustomed to the school routine.
Captures Photos of Students Enrolled After Fall Picture Day
Many students enroll after picture day, but don’s have the opportunity for photos. They will be photographed during the spring and included for their classroom and families to enjoy.
Gives an Opportunity for Your School to Have a Session Different From the Fall
Prior to spring photo day, we can chat about alternative ways to do the spring photos. We can use the same set up as the fall, but photograph more of the student rather than a tight headshot. Or, use a different color backdrop. This year I’m suggesting students bring in a favorite item, like a stuffed animal, doll, book, or hat to be photographed with. These items elicit pride in the students and really add to telling the story of their childhood and highlighting their natural smiles and true personality.
Creates Timeless Keepsakes for Spring Holidays
Fall school pictures are favorite gifts for parents to give to extended families and Grandparents. Spring photos are lovely to have for the spring holidays, such as Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Easter, Passover, Graduation, etc.
Time Moves Fast, And Kids Change
As mentioned at the start of this post, time moves so quickly for kids. Between their fall and spring photos, they may have started or finished wearing glasses, have a new hairstyle, their sibling may now be at the school and available for sibling photos, or they may have a new bff at school that they’d love to take a buddy photo with. Modern school portraits are a unique and valuable way to document your child’s growth over time in a timeless and beautiful way.
