How I pose (or don’t pose) families

I’ve heard from many people that they are nervous about having their photo taken because they don’t know how to pose for photos. But, here’s the thing…with lifestyle family photography you don’t really need to worry about posing.

Create A Relaxed Atmosphere

First of all, with all sessions I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere of fun and joy for all family members. This isn’t a time to worry about perfect hair and smiles. Within that relaxed and fun atmosphere I guide individuals or family groupings into beautiful light and unique locations and backdrops, and will then encourage interaction.

Let’s Connect

Once I have guided you into the next location or area for photos, I’ll typically ask that you hold hands, pick up the kids, etc, in a way that feels natural and unforced. I will occasionally turn someone to face the light, or recommend a re-arrangement of the position of people in the frame, but there will not be specific posing directions such as where to place a foot or hand.

I’ll recommend options and ideas to encourage natural and flattering limb placement. Then, I will often direct individuals to look at each other, with jokes, storytelling, and funny comments as the ultimate goal is for natural and casual family connection through mutual gaze and communication.

Let’s Get Moving

One way that I don’t pose yet pose families is by encouraging movement through various activities, such as holding hands and running towards the camera, tossing your toddler in the air, etc. I’ll direct families on what to do, and then we have fun through movement. No stiff poses to hold in a frozen way. Kids love that they just get to relax and have fun playing with their family.

Still Not Sure What To Do?

So…you’ve probably gotten the idea now that you don’t need to worry about what to do during your session other than relax and have fun with your people. I’ll be the one to let you know where to stand, and guide you into natural interactions that are comfortable and fun with the ultimate results of natural and relaxed family photos.
