Behind The Frame, Part ii
Favorite Photograph’s I’ve Taken, some behind the frame details, and why I love them, part ii.
This is a showcase of a few client and personal images I’ve taken over the years, focusing on color, composition, connection, and joy. All of my favorite things! If you’d like to see the first installment of ‘Behind The Frame’, check out Behind The Frame, Part i
Red Paper Airplanes
This cool art installation was located close to our apartment when we lived overseas…and my daughter and I brainstormed together how we could take a cool photo here. We decided to use a monochromatic ‘ish’ color theme by having her wear a red dress. Then, we made our own red paper airplane, which she is throwing in the photo…its kind of fun because it’s takes a little bit of time to look around the image to find the real paper airplane. We also wanted to add some frozen movement into the image, not just with the throwing of the paper airplane, but with my daughters movement as well…which you can see in her hair and jump off the ground. This image was featured in Click Magazine’s Why It Works Column as well!
Blue Store
When we were doing the monthly color project and were on the color blue, we found this shop literally labeled ‘ blue house’ which was perfect for the blue theme in more ways than one! So, I asked my girls to go over and take a look at the scarves outside the shop while having them close to the left side rule of thirds area. They are facing each other, talking about what they see, and I tried to get as much of the shop’s exterior in the frame to explore. I recently printed this photo for my home, and found that there is so much more to explore in the image once looking at it printed, than I had even seen when it was just on my computer. Another feature in this image I like is that the girls have subtle red and yellow in their clothes which is ever so subtly mimicked in the coloring book product in the basket on the table behind them giving nice contrast to all of the blue.
Child Holding Parents Hand (viewed from parents perspective)
As a Mom, I love the feeling of a small hand in mine, and the look they give me when they are looking back and up into my eyes. This is something that I want to be able to feel and remember when my own kids are grown…and so I also incorporate this into many of my client’s photo sessions. The parents are not explicitly seen in the image, and instead it’s as if you are the parent looking down at the child. There’s leading lines from their arm down to the child, connection with the held hand, and the eye contact to the viewer. By shooting from overhead it creates the feeling of being the taller/older parent and also helps to create a less distracting background in the image.
Newborn Snuggles
Capturing the first few weeks with your newborn is so important, and something I’m so glad to have with my own children. What I love about this image is that you can feel its quietness and stillness. The mom is holding the baby gently to her chest while taking in that sweet newborn smell that fades so quickly. It’s just a quick quiet moment between baby and mom, amidst a time where this family also has an energy filed toddler. I just love the peaceful feeling here and the calm tones as well.
