What type of images to expect from your family photography session
Do you ever wonder what images are on my shot list for your session?
After you complete your client questionnaire I create a custom shot list for your family, to ensure I capture every image needed to tell your families unique story.
I’m going to walk you through a recent session which was shot at Gabriel Park in Portland to detail the images that I captured at this session.
Individual Children’s Portraits
Right off the bat I will take individual portraits of each child in your family. This gives them a moment to chat with me and helps them to become more comfortable with me and my camera, breaking the ice, so to speak. Also, taking these portraits in the same location makes for a nice wall collage or spread in an album.
Full Family Portrait
After the individual children’s portraits we’ll head right into a full family group portrait. This way we’ve accomplished the primary goal of a family session and can then move into smaller groupings and having lots of fun!
Sibling Photos
I recommend to families to bring a colorful or meaningful blanket to sessions, in case there’s not a great area to sit. This family had brought such a lovely picnic blanket to their session, so while it was out for the group family image, I had the two youngest sisters take some photos together. Their twin bond and love was palpable here!
Then I asked all of the girls to do some movement related activities with big sister in the lead…here they were skipping towards me.
In Between Moments
When kids are interacting naturally with each other and with their environment, I’ll do my best to capture those childhood moments that tell your families story. So, when the girls were picking flowers and dandelions, I wanted to record those memories which I’m sure happen each time they visit the park.
Unique Portraits
I’ll often utilize the unique features of our location to create fun and individualized portraits during our session, as time allows. This field of flowers was a great inspiration to create a fun portrait of the family big sister.
Group & Individual Photos With Each Parent
Parent Portraits
I make it a priority to capture a few images at each session of the parents alone together. It’s so important to me to give them these few precious moments to connect and remember how their family started. I believe that it’s important for kids to have this type of photo of their parents as well.
More Group Family Photos
As time, light, and kids’ moods allows, I’ll always add in more group photos, and then let the kids explore and see what we find.
Casual Fun Moments
We found the loveliest wildflower field at Gabriel Park and closed out our session having fun with the flowers. I try to end all of my sessions with a natural fun activity, like looking at the river, throwing rocks in the water, and hanging out having fun together.
